A PC Player’s Confession
I’ve never been a console-first gamer, so I never felt a great pull to invest heavily in them even as more MMORPGs began setting up shop on PlayStation and Xbox. I dabbled with Free Realms and DC Universe Online on my PS3 back before the PS4 was king, but I always preferred my PC. The ability to use addons, the precision of mouse aiming, and the comfort of my own desk setup kept me coming back. For me, the PC has always been the home of MMOs, and I never saw a reason to switch. Now that I have a Switch, there still aren’t that many MMOs or online titles to speak of – a few exceptions aside, it’s a barren landscape. And even for games I could play on both platforms, like Warframe and Diablo III, I just want my keyboard and mouse in my comfy chair. Old habits die hard, and I’ve always found the PC environment more suited to long MMO sessions.
MMOs That Belong on Console
But all that said, I can still spot an MMO that would be right at home on a console. Why the heck isn’t Guild Wars 2 on console? Its action-oriented combat with dodge mechanics and a generous free-to-play model seem tailor-made for a controller audience. The same goes for Blade & Soul, whose intricate directional combos and fast-paced PvP feel natural on a gamepad. MapleStory 2’s cute aesthetic and side-scrolling segments also scream console. And really, any decent superhero MMO deserves a shot on console – the genre’s action and movement are perfect for a buttoned layout. These are games that feel like they were designed with a controller in mind, yet they remain PC-only. Then there’s World of Warcraft, which can run on a toaster; with the built-in controller support that’s already available on PC, it’s baffling it hasn’t made the jump to Xbox or PlayStation.
